FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR LOW MILK PRODUCTION IN PAKISTAN

There Are Following Factors

  1. LOW GENETIC POTENTIAL OF OUR ANIMALS:
It is a fact that we have the best dairy breeds but unfortunately their genetic potential has deteriorated and being deteriorated day by day due to wrong breeding policy being adapted at farmer’s level. Due to this deterioration the availability of dairy breeds in pure form is very limited one.

  1. LATE AGE OF MATURITY:
In order to get more production, it is necessary that animal starts its productive life earlier but unfortunately our dairy heifers mature about 1 year later as compared to recommendations. We recommended that our buffalo heifer must mature at 2.5-3 years of age and our cow heifer must mature at the age of 1.5-2 years. Due to delay in maturity not only cost of production increases but also heavy economic losses occur.

  1. GENETIC POTENTIAL OF OUR ANIMALS IS NOT FULLY EXPLOITED:
The genetic potential of our animals is not being fully exploited mainly due to the underfeeding both in terms of quality and quantity of feed.

  1. HIGH ECONOMIC LOSSES DUE TO DISEASES:
These losses are very high both in terms of mortality rate and morbidity rate. There are certain diseases such as H.S, Rabies and Anthrax etc. that lead to high mortality. However there are certain diseases such as FMD, Mastitis and Cowpox etc. that lead to high production loss. These losses are in the form of:
  1. Expenditures on treatment.
  2. Special feeding allowance (expenditures to recover the previous yield).
  3. Loss in milk.
Control
If economic losses are decreased, not only production of that farm increases but it also contributes to strengthen the national economy. Through efficient management, it is possible by adopting the following practices:

  1. Vaccination.
  2. Deworming.
  3. Dipping.
  4. Mastitis Control Program.
  5. Housing and Sanitation.

  1. UNORGANISED MARKETING SYSTEM:
Existing marketing system is not a producer friendly as it encourages the middlemen and discourages the farmers. Most of the profit is being picked by the middlemen and very less by the farmers. To make the marketing system efficient, the best option is to direct the chain from producer to consumer. Technically it is not possible in Pakistan. There are 26 milk processing units in Pakistan out of which 15 are working under capacity and these are producing very low quality milk which is unfit for human use because they collect synthetic milk. The quality of processed product mainly depends upon raw material. An organized marketing system has the following advantages:
  1. Farmer is encouraged to produce more milk.
  2. Consumer will get good quality milk.

  1. FARMING ON TRADITIONAL LINES:
Our dairy farmers are totally ignorant about the recommended practices. They are blindly following the traditional practices resulting in high cost of production and low profitability at farmer’s level.
