PURCHASE OF DAIRY ANIMALS

For profitable dairying, it is recommended that instead of keeping only one species i-e- cow or buffalo do mix farming with a preferable ratio of 50:50. However, the ratio 70:30 is also acceptable. The benefits of mix farming are:
  1. Both species vary in breeding season and in order to ensure a regular milk supply it is imperative.
  2. Profitable marketing e.g. if we sale only cow’s milk it is 40 Rs. per litre but if we sale mix milk of cow and buffalo, it is 55 Rs. per litre.

Business Types

      HEIFER FARMING.
Raise heifers; make them pregnant and sale prior to milking. It is very beneficial.

NON-DESCRIPT ANIMALS.
We purchase the animals having low genetic potential and we can improve the genetic potential of the next generation.

We can directly purchase elite cow or buffalo.

PRECAUTIONS While purchasing animals
  1. Never purchase pregnant animals because we are not sure about the production performance of that animal. Such animals may get some disease problems which increase the economic loss.
  2. Purchase the lactating animals at least after 3 milkings. First milking is wrong milking, 2nd and 3rd milkings are true milkings, get average of these. Keep in view the following points while purchasing the animal:
  •           All teats should be functional.
  •           Teats should be soft and pliable.
  •           Teats should be equally spaced.
  •           Teats should not be too long or too short or too wide.
  •           Udder should be large and well spaced between the hind legs.
  •           Udder should be completely collapsed.
  •           Perform SFMT (Surf Field Mastitis Test) at the spot.

SFMT (surf field mastitis test)
Take 250 ml water. Add 3 teaspoons of surf excel in water and mix it thoroughly. Take milk from each teat. Milk and surf solution should be equal in quantity. Gently mix and see the change.
  • If there are traces or pins, then it is positive negative.
  • If there are small clots, then it is 1 positive ( mild clumping )
  • If there are large clots and no gel formation, then it is 2 positive ( moderate clumping )
  • If there is gel formation, then it is 3 positive (heavy clumping).
