DISBUDDING

       

      This practice is carried out within 3 weeks after birth. The main objectives of disbudding are:

i)                    To increase the market value of animal because our people prefer dehorned cows and buffaloes.

ii)                  To avoid injuries.

iii)                To make animal docile.

PROCEDURE:

1.   Lye the calf on ground with straight head.
2.   Locate the horn bud (bud area will be blackish, hard and slightly projected).
3.   Clip the hairs around the bud.
4.  Make a layer of Vaseline around the bud.
5.  Take caustic soda stick in one hand and a piece of cotton in the other hand.
6.  Gently rub the stick on the bud and pick the melted matter with cotton.
7.  Continue rubbing till blood  ooze.
8.  Apply Vaseline on bud. If more bleeding, apply tincture of iodine.
